Welcome

Welcome to Missituk Elementary School

Our mission at Missituk Elementary School is to provide every child with an education based on respect for self and others. The Missituk is a diverse school community. The instructional focus of the Missituk promotes the ability to think clearly and creatively, communicate effectively, support social-emotional health, and develop a love of learning. Our goal is that with the development of these skills, our children will become happy, productive, and responsible citizens of the 21st century.
Our dedicated staff of 80 + teachers, assistants, paraprofessionals, administrators, and other service providers work with approximately 435 children. They are key in helping to make our learning environment child-centered and rich with interactive lessons in all curriculum areas. Our teachers focus on educating the whole child with meaningful, real-world experiences in a manner that is educational, valuable, and enjoyable. We are committed to meeting each child's individual needs and ability level, which includes their well-being - socially and emotionally, as well as academically. All Missituk family members belong to our PTO. They help in planning field trips, after-school enrichment programs, and classroom activities. This is a great way to get involved in your child's education, in any way you can.
Some background on your principal, I grew up and attended school in West Medford. My teaching career began in Winchester, where I taught pre-school for 2 years. I then taught at Hervey Elementary for 3 years until it closed, and for 10 years at Brooks Elementary. I became the Assistant Principal at Missituk for eleven years, and now its Principal.
Through my early childhood experiences, I came to embrace Maria Montesorri’s philosophy that it is “about the process, not the product.” I also believe that the home-school connection is vitally important for children’s success, and I work hard to keep that link active. I can always be reached at nsherman-hudson@medford.k12.ma.us and by phone at 781-393-2177 ex:3506.
In closing, I welcome you to our community, where all families belong.
Sincerely,
Nancy Sherman-Hudson M.Ed.

The name Missituk derives from the native American Pequot tribe, Miss-tuk, which means “a large river whose waters are driven into waves by tides or wind.”
