What's happening in 1st Grade?

What's happening in 1st Grade?

Students in Mrs. Burke's 1st grade class became published authors today. Families were invited into the classroom to sit and read with their student. What amazing stories all the students wrote! Some stories were based on real-life experiences, some were fantasy, all had wonderful illustrations and a blurb about the author. Congratulations to all the students who wrote a book! Well done! Photos of the event are shown here.

At the end of the year, some first grade classrooms are having a camp week! Boy, were the students surprised when they came in. The students desks are tents, and they've brought in the necessities like blankets and pillows. The classroom has become a cozy campsite with the sounds of a crackling fire and a "waterfall, and "fireplace". On this first day, students were journaling in about their 1st day at camp. See photos of the "Camp" here.

In June, Mrs. Mustone's class read the book Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and then had to decide if the image was a duck or a rabbit. Which is correct? You can be the judge after reading their arguments.

In May, Mrs. Rich's class read a story about endangered species and the created this beautiful poster together.  Students also did a mini research project about (mostly) endangered animals . They created individual posters with facts - such a great job!  See their work here.

One activity first graders do in class is work on their handwriting. When asked about handwriting practice, students say: "It's good, but I would want harder sentences." Another student says, "It's calming and helps you form words better." Another said,  "It helps me learn a lot of things and it's fun because I like writing." More photos here

In early December,  all grade 1 classes received a visit from author, Sarah Lynne Reul.  She talked about the writing and illustration process that author's experience when making books.
